Mom's Minute 2-10-2014

  • Monday, 10 February 2014
In this 89th episode of Mom's Minute Video Game Show, Ms. H welcomes everyone to the show and hopes everyone is doing well. She opens the show with a sampling of video game music from her upcoming special guest, Dren McDonald.  The title of the video game music composed by Dren McDonald is The String Arcade. She begins the show by informing everyone that special guest, Dren McDonald, will join the show later.  Ms. H discusses the free-to play video game Zen Pinball 2 that she played on the Playstation 4 and the free trial game, Double Dragon II Wanderer of the Dragaon that she played on the Xbox 360.  She compares Zen Pinball 2 to Zenball Arcade, both playable on the PS4 stating that only one table was free (Sorcerer's Lair)  on Zen Pinball 2, while Zenball Arcade appeared to have no free tables at all even though there was a game that was said to be free.  She also stated Zen Pinball 2's multiplayer game was not playable online.  She was informed that based on the non-popularity of some online pinball video games in the past, online playing mode of these games are nonexistent.  Discussion of the two video games was followed by news that a popular video game, Flapper Bird, was taken off the market and was no longer available for play.  The reason given was the game was "too popular."  Ms. H gives her take on why this could possibly happen and found out there was the probability of an upcoming copyright infringement that could have caused the game to be pulled.  Ms. H agreed that it would not be quite logical for such a popular game to be pulled, especially one that was bringining in more than $50k a day -- but concluded that if any wrong-doings were going on -- then pulling the game off the market would be the best course of action to take at this time.   More discussion followed on the lack of free video games from Microsoft as compared to Sony -- as well as if some of Sony's free games were in some way better playing games than Microsoft's.  Next the video game character of the week, Emmet, from the game, The Lego Movie Video Game was disussed.  Without revealing spoilers from the movie,  she stated that even though Emmet was a regular builder instead of a master builder -- there was a meaning behind this as shown in the movie. The introduction of Ms. H's special guest, Dren McDonald, followed.  She informed everyone that Dren McDonald is the musical composer of the soon to be released -- The String Arcade.  Release date is February 11, 2014.  Dren McDonald discusses his music composition background as well as the bands that he played with previously.  He stated that he also worked with Jason Poss on the musical arrangements.  He explains "virtual music",  when asked by Ms. H to explain the term which was a sedgeway to a discussion on how muscians sometimes use music software to assist in orchestrating music for video games and other media.  In fact he stated some music for video games is done by using specific software.  Ms. H added that there are also video games that use full-fledged orchestras in video games.  He provides further information on how The String Arcade came about including some music which did not quite make the cut -- or fit the musical score of the current release. This music could possibly become part of another music collaboration.  He responds to whether or not music from the actual Plants and Zombie video game was used and explained how the music was arranged for this game. When asked to give advice to others who may want to release a recording or compilation of video game music as he did, he indicated it is important to be part of a community and have a reputation of being someone who will help others, so when you need help, people will come forward.  This is what he attributed, in part to the success of his kickstarter, The String Arcade project.  He also stated that all the proceeds from the sale of  The String Arcade will go to the non-profit organization for the Almeda Music Project which is an after-school project to benefit children.  The comment returned was that this was admirable since some schools are cutting their music programs. Regarding the best way to obtain this music composition,  Dren McDonald states that The String Arcade will be available on itunes.  The String Arcade will consist of 15 original tracks plus two bonus CDs.  Ms. H thanked Dren McDonald for the interview on Mom's Minute Video Game Show.  The show is rounded out with her special original saying  to believe in yourself and magic will happen.
