Introduction to Fighting With My Family Movie Review by Ms. H

Regardless of how you look at it, the Fighting With My Family movie is not a comedy even though it is categorized as such.  There are a few scenes bordering on funny, but they are few and far between. After watching Fighting With My Family, I would label this movie a drama -- and heavy on the drama.  That being said, the question is did this movie satisfy its goal to show that you should chase your dreams regardless of the obstacles. Read on to find out.

The Rock (Dwayne Johnson)  Used As Switch and Bait for Fighting With My Family Movie

You are probably familiar with the term “switch and bait”  This happens basically when you are lured into something, usually by false advertisement, only to find that the item or entity was not what you expected or is a “substitute” item.

Specifically, In the case of the Fighting With My Family movie, when you see The Rock (Dwayne Johnson) in the movie trailers, you may think he has a major role in this movie.  To the contrary -- I think Dwayne Johnson appears for the sole purpose of getting people to watch this film. In the movie, he makes a few appearances -- but not enough to be an integral part of the movie.

Plot of Fighting with My Family Movie

Plain and simple -- the movie is about a wrestling family consisting of a brother and sister, mother and father -- who are all interested in the sport of wrestling. The story centers around the brother and sister, one who was picked for professional wrestling, while the other was not.  The conflict starts when the sister instead of the brother is selected -- instead of both.

My Issues with Fighting with My Family Movie

Even though this movie is based loosely on true events, I think the fact the brother was passed over and not selected was downplayed and probably should have been written differently.  On one hand the movie shows that he was obviously upset that he was not selected and on the other, the movie wants the audience to believe that at the end of the movie he was fine with this.

Of course, there was probably little he could do about the decision but to sugar coat this situation at the end of the movie  is a disservice to the audience -- leaving the audience to think he was not only satisfied, but was happy that he was not selected.

Additionally, I think the movie is sending an erroneous message that other people have the sole power to put you in a category -- and there is nothing you can do but accept it.

Entertainment Value of Fighting With My Family

The beginning of the movie can be described as a “snooze fest” with little happening that will hold your attention.  However, as the movie progresses, my interest picked up -- especially when what appeared to be a clique of female wrestlers seemed to ostracize Paige from the group.  Another high point of interest is the “Santa Clause” fight scene since I think it probably depicted how the sibling felt about being passed over for professional wrestling.

Assessment of Fighting With My Family

In a nutshell -- I was not too keen on The Rock switch and bait angle to this movie since he appeared for only a few minutes. The storyline was based on a true story, however, I think the movie may have sent an incorrect message about the idea of “following your dream”, especially when someone else other than yourself is making that determination.  To answer the above question, the movie did not portray the message fully to follow your dreams.

As mentioned above, the only stand-out portion of the movie to me was the “santa claus” fighting because it seemed more realistic than the other parts of the story.

Should you watch Fighting With My Family.? My recommendation is for you to skip this movie unless you are just curious or do not mind being underwhelmed.
