Introduction to the What Men Want Movie Review by Ms. H
I’ve watched the actor Taraji P. Henson on several talk shows, so I knew she had a sense of humor based on how she answered some interview questions. What Men Want is the first comedy I’ve seen with Taraji P. Henson as the star. Did she deliver as I expected? Check out my movie review and find out.
By the way -- The What Men Want movie is rated R and should not be seen by anyone under 17 years of age without being accompanied by parents or guardians.
My First Impressions of the What Men Want Movie
After seeing the trailer for the What Men Want movie, I was ready for lots of laughs. Unfortunately, they were few and far between. The most memorable scene in the movie was when Taraji P. Henson reached for and caught the football over the meeting table -- then finding out that the football was not meant for her. On a positve note, I liked the fast pace of the What Men Want movie, at least in the beginning, when she seemed to move around quickly.
Plot of the What Men Want Movie
The plot of the What Men Want movie is one that I’ve seen in movies time and time again -- but in different environments and with various scenarios. For example, this movie reminded me a little of Jennifer Lopez’s recent movie -- Second Act. The major difference is it was clear to me that Taraji P. Henson is a more skilled or accomplished actor than Jennifer Lopez. For instance, Taraji P. Henson is able to show varying emotions with her facial expressions to set the tone for a particular scene. By contrast, Jennifer Lopez’s acting is adequate, but not at the same high calibre as Taraji P. Henson's.
Taraji P. Henson plays the role of a sports agent, trying to land a football star for the company. She is joined by Tracy Morgan who is the father of the football star. In my opinion, he tried too hard to be funny -- and unfortunatelly -- never made the grade.
Breakout Star of the What Men Want Movie
The actor who surprised me in this movie was Erykah Badu's portrayal of a psychic who apparently had other side-occupations as well. You may know that Erykah Badu is known mostly as a singer. It was as if this part was crafted especially for her. In fact, others agree with me because she is given extra camera time at the end of the movie. If you want to see her psychic predictions for some of the other characters, hang back after the movie ends and watch the out-takes.
Predictability of the What Men Want Movie
The What Men Want movie is predictable since you probably get the impression everything will work out for Taraji P. Henson’s character. However, there is one big almost twist in the movie towards the end -- that you may or may not expect. But, true to form for comedies, this action is changed towards the end and everything worked out.
Assessment of the What Men Want Movie
If you enjoy watching romantic comedies or even sports, I do not think the What Men Want movie will disappoint you. The downside was I did not like the amount of profanity throughout this movie. I closed my ears to these parts concentrating instead on the story. There are a few laughs throughout the movie, but I did not find any parts where I laughed out loud, except for the football catch scene that I mentioned earlier.
That being said, I found the movie to be entertaining. Like me, you may find the ending of the movie questionable especially since there was no lead up to this decision being made. To respond to the question posed earlier on whether Taraji P. Benson delivered in the What Men Want movie -- my answer is yes. However, there were some room for improvement in the movie itself.
Rating of the What Men Want Movie
Based on a rating of 1 star to 5 stars with 5 stars being the highest, I rate the What Men Want Movie 3 stars.
