Introduction to the Kin Movie Review by Ms. H
I read the promotion prior to seeing the Kin movie; however, I did not watch the previews or trailers. My take-away from the movie promotion is the Kin movie is produced by the same people responsible for Netflix’s Stranger Things, so I knew the movie was probably science-fiction based. Additionally, I watched a few episodes of Stranger Things so I had an idea of what the movie may be similar to. DId the movie Kin disappoint? Check out my movie review to find out.
Synopsis of the Kin Movie
The movie Kin centers around a family whose son returns home after being incarcerated but owes a debt to criminals that he cannot repay -- without trying to get the money illegally. In the meantime, the younger brother has discovered a powerful weapon in an abandoned dilapidated building. By the way, the main character of the movie is a 14 year old young man by the name of Elijah Solinki played by Myles Truitt.
Knowledge of Characters’ Background in the Kin Movie
Even though the movie starts off with an explosion, for the most part, the writer/director focused on giving the audience background information about the major characters. I applaud this being done especially since it seems as if some movies dwell strictly on the action instead of allowing the audience to get to know the characters. For this reason, the movie is slow-moving in some parts, and plays more like a drama instead of an action movie.
Acting Skills Displayed in the Kin Movie
I think most of the actors performed their roles well. The exception was the actor who played the part of the casino owner who, in my opinion, did not say or act his part convincingly. If I had to choose an actor who stood out in this movie, I would pick James Franco who played the part of the villain Taylor Balik. I think James Franco is an actor who is not typecast as either a bad or good guy in movies since he seems to be able to play both type characters well. Regarding one of his lines, I did not like how he identified the African-American young male in the movie. I also was not a fan of the gun violence displayed in the Kin movie.
Special Effects in the Kin Movie
SImilar to the lack of action-packed sequences, the Kin movie is also small on special effects or Computer Generated Imagery (CGI). For the most part, these type events were few and far between. If you see the Kin movie, do not expect to see an over-abundance of computer tricks and special effects in the movie.
Unrealistic Scenes in the Kin Movie
Of course this is a movie, so a certain amount of unrealistic events can be expected. Spoiler alert: However, I think it is far-fetched to think that someone would run away from their place of employment with strangers who had just entered the establishment. Furthermore, maybe in the interest of film time -- it was not shown how or when Zoe Kravitz’s character changed her clothng since she practically ran out from her job in her work clothes. Also, it seemed unlikely that she would return to the scene of indictment after she had quietly left previously. Some of my questions include: What happened to cause the “robots-like” people to come alive and what was the source of their special powers? Also, why didn’t Miles Truitt’s character know who he was since the movie did not show he had amnesia, loss of memory, etc.?
Assessment of the Kin Movie
Overall, the Kin movie was not bad, but on the other hand it was not a very good movie either. Was I disappointed with this movie? Spoiler Alert: I was not disappointed with this movie mainly because of the ending where Michael B. Jordan’s character appeared and said some reassuring words to the main character as well as explained what was going on and who he was.
That being said, I would have liked to have seen one of the main characters realize his wrong ways and make amends. I think the movie would have had a more overall positive atmosphere or affect if this person changed his ways by learning from his mistakes rather than repeating them.
Rating of the Kin Movie
Based on a rating of 1 star to 5 stars with 5 stars being the highest, I rate the Kin movie 2 ½ stars.
