Introduction to Upgrade Movie Review by Ms. H

I did not see this movie coming. In fact, I do not recall seeing a preview of the movie Upgrade or the trailer. However, based on the synopsis of the movie I read when checking out movies that are currently out in theaters, I decided to see it. I envisioned the movie would be about an individual who became super strong due to a computer upgrade of some sort. However, this movie was about a lot more than that.

Storyline of Upgrade Movie

You’ve probably seen it before -- where someone is castotrophically injured, and get a new lease on life with some sort of robotic implant. I think the storyline in Upgrade is more powerful than this scenario.  Without giviing away any spoilers, I can almost guarantee you this storyline will keep you in suspense and the movie will keep your interest throughout.

Acting Abilities Displayed in Upgrade Movie

The abilities of the actors were adequate for the movie.  There were even a display of raw emotion by the main actor which is on par as a result of what happened to him and his significant other who was close to him.  Of the actors, the one that I think could have improved his acting skills was the character who had the mechanism to “cure” the main character Grey Chase as played by Logan Marshall-Green. This actor was Harrison Gilbertson whose lines were stiff and if not for his small part in the movie -- could have ruined the entire movie. Thankfully, his part was inconsequential. Therefore the movie was not spoiled due to his lack of acting chops.

Believability of the Upgrade Movie

This movie is set in the future where there is advanced technology, even though outdated technology from the older days remained -- especially relative to vehicles.  That being said, even in the future, I don’t believe  vehicles would be completely covered up so the occupants cannot see out.

The most unbelievable part of the movie was when this so-called “Stem” was able to leave the occupant's body, take over another car, and use it to fight against another car.  I will not go into more details here, since I do not want to ruin the movie -- but the segment where this “being” acted alone without the aid the “host” was far-fetched -- even though a lot of the movie-goers probably did not catch this.

Gross Scenes in the Upgrade Movie

Warning:  There are several scenes that it may be best if you move your eyes away from the screen when they appear.  In the Upgrade movie, there is not an abundance of gross scenes, but it appeared that they made the most of the few that were used in this movie. If you see this movie, you will know what I'm talking about.

Assessment of Upgrade Movie

Upgrade had a few humorous parts -- but overall, it is a movie about revenge, artificial intelligence and the prevalence of this sort of intelligence in our society.  Though set in the future, it may cause one to take pause as to the autonomy given to computers, electronics and any means of intelligence that should be anchored by the human brain.  That being said, I think the movie was well done, not overly done, and it ended where and when it should have ended. This movie also kept my interest, as I’m quite sure, it may keep yours as well.

You may leave this movie thinking what’s in the future with artificial intelligence and humans -- or you may think of something else.  The big pro here is this movie will probably leave you thinking.

Based on a rating of 1 to 5 stars with 5 stars being the best, I rate Upgrade 4 stars.
