Introduction to the Tag Movie Review by Ms. H

If you are familiar with the Avengers: Infinity War movie, you will probably know that one of the superheroes, Hawkeye as played by Jeremy Renner did not appear.  Was he busy working on another movie that conflicted with the Avengers movie? This is plausible but was not the case. I found out that Hawkeye’s character was intentionally not written in the Avengers: Infinity War movie.  However, if you are a Hawkeye fan, don’t fret. Jeremy Renner may appear in the next Avengers movie.

Plot of the Tag Movie

Jeremy Renner stars as one of a group of friends who annually play the game of Tag -- a game they have been playing for over 30 years.  During the month of May each year they recreate this youthful activity they played as kids. The plot of the movie Tag is, of course, to tag people. The person who is tagged becomes “It” and in turn must tag someone else to free himself from being “It.” I believe the writer and producer added their own take on this movie by having one character who has never -- in 30 years -- been tagged as “It” -- Jeremy Renner’s role. His friends try to get him to become the next “it” -- taking extraordinary, sometimes funny risks to do so.

Look-alikes in the Tag Movie

I would be remiss if I reviewed the Tag movie without bringing up the look-alike actors that are in it. I did a double take when an actor who strongly resembles Amy Adams appeared on the screen.  After closer scrutiny, I determined she was not Amy Adams but was in fact Isla Fisher, a renowned actor in her own right. Interesting enough, I found her to be one of the most entertaining actors in this movie -- even though her role was not as big as some of the others.  As the movie progresses, yet another look-alike actor showed up. She was Rashida Jones who played the role of Cheryl Deakins. She could almost be a twin to Kat Dennings, the brunette from the television show 2 Broke Girls. By the way, I’m bringing this up as points of interest -- which does not factor into my rating for the movie Tag.

Pros of the Tag Movie

There are a number of spots in the movie where you might laugh out loud.  I think the writer and producer did an awesome job of taking the real-life escapades of these friends and crafting their adventures into an entertaining movie. Without spoiling the movie, the humor comes from just about each individual actor who got the opportunity to be featured in the movie -- by either saying something humorous or acting out a funny part in the movie.

I think the Tag movie will hold your attention not only due to the storyline, but because this movie will keep you guessing if the situations are real or made up. Along these lines, the Tag movie reminds me of a film I watched and rated recently, Game Night. Check out my review of the movie, Game Night at allgames.com.

Additionally,  the script was well adapted to the actions in the movie.  I’m sure lots of parts were added to the movie that did not happen in real life; however, those scenes blended in naturally with the storyline.

The acting skills of the actors were up to par with the movie and they performed their roles adequately. I think it helped that most of the actors already had experience working in other movies.

Cons of the Tag Movie

Tag is not considered a family movie and movie goers must be over 17 years of age, since the movie is rated R.

I was not a fan of the stop action, slow-motion animation for some of the scenes which I believe was overdone. It’s ok to show a group of people maybe walking together in slow motion, but when it comes to action, i.e. jumping down stairs, doing flips, etc., I believe the director could have toned this down a bit.

There is minimal to no suspense in the Tag movie. Once the movie  starts, you should have a general idea how the movie will probably end.  Spoiler Alert: There is a medical part that may be unexpected, but for the most part, the movie itself is predictable.

Assessment of the Tag Movie

Overall, I think there is  entertainment value if you see the movie Tag. You may have to close your ears to some of the dialogue as well as close your eyes on some of the scenes in the movie -- even if you are over 17 years old.  However, that being said, the length of the Tag movie is just right to allow you time to take a break from your busy day and enjoy a few laughs.

Rating of the Tag Movie

Based on a rating of 1 star to 5 stars with 5 stars being the highest, I rate the Tag movie 3 stars.
