Introduction to Deadpool 2 Movie Review by Ms. H

Deadpool is mostly about references to superheroes and other pop culture in the dialogue.  In fact, I think the writers wanted to see how many superheroes Deadpool could name in one movie. As an aside, Deadpool also talks about John Wick who is not a superhero. On the pop culture side, Justin Bieber, Beyonce and others are mentioned.  Unfortunately by having Deadpool focus on these characters during the movie, there was little emphasis on Deadpool himself except to show him being comically destroyed and then of course resurrected.   However, I’m getting ahead of myself. Here is my review of Deadpool 2.

Movie Plot of Deadpool 2

The movie plot of Deadpool 2 is hackneyed and one that’s been told numerous times before. Specifically, Deadpool’s girlfriend is destroyed during a shoot-out after they talked about possible names for their imaginary baby. A few names for the baby mentioned in a negative way included Earl and Todd.  If your name is Earl or Todd, you may want to laugh this off as movie jokes so you will not get offended. Back to the plot -- Deadpool attacks the assailant and later visits his girlfriend in dream sequences.

In my opinion, good movies have an engaging and strong storyline regardless of the type genre.  Unfortunately, the storyline of Deadpool 2 was weak. The Deadpool 2 movie was filled with explosions, plenty of battles and dream sequences.  Spoiler Alert:  For instance, several times Deadpool would go into a dream sequence, talk with his deceased girlfriend and leave with a mission based on his interpretation of their conversation.  Of course, after he completed his deeds which all involved battles -- she indicated it was not time for him to be there. So in essence, you watched a movie filled with battle scenes based upon his interpretations of what she told him to do -- all for naught.

Huge spoiler alert: If you see Deadpool 2 -- you may want to stay until all, and I emphasize “all”  the credits have rolled to see a mini movie showing Deadpool 2 and Logan who is Wolverine.  I like that the Deadpool 2 movie starts with Deadpool in a scene with Logan (sort of) and the movie ends with these characters as well. Even though I do not approve of the violence --  this mini movie, in my opinion had more of an entertaining story than the totality of the Deadpool 2 movie.

Goal of Deadpool 2

Was Deadpool’s ultimate goal to save the young mutant boy or was he saving this character so he could be with his romantic interest in the dream?   Your guess is as good as mine. Since the writers were overly focused on Deadpool speaking dialogue that did not move the story along, this was not clear.  Additionally, it did not help that Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool would sometimes talk to you as an audience member, for example introducing you to an upcoming CGI battle scene in the movie, which could break your concentration on the movie.

Grossness of Deadpool 2

The level of grossness in Deadpool 2 was expected since I saw Deadpool 1.  However, in Deadpool 2, the writers went, in my opinion overboard when the character talked about a bodily function result that was in his costume.   Of course profane language was used a lot including the character who played the part of the 14 year old mutant. This character, Firefist, as played by Julian Dennison was not one of my favorite characters especially since he had a potty mouth and seemed to be walloping in self-pity while blaming others for his misfortunes.

Acting Abilities of the Actors in Deadpool 2

Ryan Reynolds in his role as Deadpool's acting was adequate as well as the other actors in the movie. However, the stand-out actor for me was Zazie Beetz who played the part of Domino. She was my favorite because there was no over or under acting done on her part.  She also played her role admirably as a character in an action movie, instead of a superhero critic. This job was left for Deadpool.

Assessment of Deadpool 2

I anticipated Deadpool 2 would be an enjoyable, humorous movie with a storyline.  During one of Ryan Reynolds promotional interviews for the movie, he indicated that unlike Deadpool 1, the writers were not tied to how Deadpool evolved, so they were not limited in what they could do with this movie.  Unfortunately, they seemed to have taken this to the extreme and should have reigned in or controlled Deadpool’s dialogue to try to strengthen the plot -- which they did not. On the plus side, there are some creative parts in the movie. For example, towards the beginning of the film, there is parody of Deadpool acting as Agent 007 along with humorous credits. This was entertaining, creative and well done. But overall, I left the movie with the impression that I had just seen a "disjointed" movie which was not what I expected.

If you watch movies for action alone,  you will probably like Deadpool 2. However, if you want to see a movie that has action along with a storyline that draws you in, Deadpool 2 may not be the movie for you.   I was initially going to give this movie 3 1/2 stars but decreased my rating by ½ point due to what Deadpool 2 says in the end about what makes up a family. If you watch the movie, you will know what I’m referring to.

Rating of Deadpool 2

Based on a rating of 1 star to 5 stars with 5 stars being the best, I rate the Deadpool 2 movie 3 stars.
