Introduction to the Breaking In Movie Review by Ms H

It seems like ages since I saw the preview of Breaking In before the movie finally reached the theater.  Maybe there was an effort to tie in the release date with Mother’s Day. I’m not sure, but I’m happy to say the title of the movie is on point.  You will not have to wonder how they came up with the title of the movie. With that being said, here’s my review of the Breaking In movie.

Plot of the Breaking In Movie

As I alluded to previously, the title of the movie sums up exactly what the movie is all about. This story scenario has probably been told countless times before where the goal of the break in is for the robbers, etc. to take something of value -- in this case -- money, with unlucky guests or visitors caught in the middle.  If you see Breaking In, you will know without a shadow of a doubt who has a key leading role and who also did an admirable job of performing her part. In fact, I would go one step further and say that Gabrielle Union, the star of the movie, did most of the heavy lifting to make sure the audience got their money’s worth.

Acting Skills of the Actors in the Breaking In Movie

I think almost  everyone did an adequate job of performing their role, with Gabrielle Union being the stand-out actor.  The second best actor was the person who played the “deranged” captor who not only looked the part, but played his part well.  The actor who, in my opinion, needs to brush up on their acting skills is Ajiona Alexus who played the role of the daughter. She needs to remember that when you are in eminent danger, you don’t turn on and off the look of fear -- just like a faucet.  When you see the movie, you will know what I’m talking about.

There was a weak acting scene performed by Billy Burke  who played the role of bad guy Eddie. in the movie, he stands outside in front of a window with the shade going down automatically, His captors are inside the house looking at him. He just stood there, like he was waiting for the director to tell him to leave the scene.  A much more realistic motion would have been for him to bang on the glass window as if he was trying to get in -- instead of just standing there.

Contrived Incidences in the Breaking In Movie

There are certain parts of the Breaking In movie, where you may ask why didn’t the actor perform what should have been common sense actions -- if this was not a movie.  Spoiler Alert:  For example, why didn’t Billy Burke’s character destroy Gabrielle Union’s character instead of his “partner in crime” -- especially since he was the only one who knew the combination to the safe. During the roof scene when Gabrielle Union’s character was going to be overtaken by the two criminals -- why were there such long pauses, giving her a chance to get away.  You will find quite a few of these situations throughout the movie. 

Major Spoiler Alert. I call this a major spoiler alert because if what should have happened -- occurred, the movie would have been over before it started.  Specifically, when a frantic call was made to 911 early on in the movie -- I’m certain the 911 operator got the location of the call and would have dispatched someone to check on the caller.  At the very least, the 911 operator would have called the number back to verify what was happening. In the interest of prolonging the movie-- this of course did not happen. I’m excusing these incidences as being the cost of making a movie where the writer/director want a certain movie outcome in the end.

Assessment of the Breaking In Movie

As I watched the movie, I got the impression it was being drawn out to last a certain amount of time.  For example, I did not see a need for the father to return when he really didn’t do much to help out the situation. However, I think in the interest of time, his entrance added more content to the movie. Due to the impressive acting done by Gabrielle Union, the movie was not a flop.  On the other hand, it was not overly good or overly bad either. In a word, the movie was ok. By the way, a plus for the movie was the suspenseful music score that sometimes played in the background during the movie.

Based on a rating of 1 star to 5 stars with 5 stars being the highest, I rate Breaking In 2 ½ stars.
