Written by Ms. H

Hot off the press!  From Batman: Arkham City Tweeter Feed!  New downloadable content for Batman: Arkham City will be available December 20, 2011! The Jokers Carnival and Iceberg Lounge will also be available.

The fresh, new Batman:  Arkham City DLC will be for Xbox Live and the Playstation Network.

Here is Batman: Arkham City art below:

As of this printing, details are a little sketchy --  such as the name of the pack, as well as the price.  The one certainty is the date of availability -- December 20, 2011!

The new DLC  for Batman:  Arkham City will have a location of the Batcave as an option in the Challenge Room.

Previous downloadable content brought you maps and map packs instead of new storylines. Hopefully Rocksteady Studios is listening to what you would like in new DLC for Batman: Arkham City and deliver!

Video Games: Top 15 Most Difficult Video Games!

donkey kong

Donkey Kong Country Returns, WII, 2010

This list of the top 15 most difficult video games across various platforms and time-frames,  is from Scott Reyburn and may not  include games that you personally consider to be very hard to play.  Of course,  the level of difficulty of video games is relative and will differ among individual players.

If you would like to add to the list, or to give your opinions on any of the games listed, I would like to hear from you in my  comments section or in my Ms. H's forum!

Ready?  Without further ado here is Scott Reyburn's list of the 15 most difficult video games to play. (To see the complete list of 15 video games, please click on the Donkey Kong Icon below).

1.  Robotron: 2084, Atari 5200, 1983 --  Requires moving across two dimensional planes, among enemies and thickets.  You are continually moving at a rapid pace within a square shaped area to avoid intense enemies and weapon fire. Additionally, you have to use two arcade joysticks simultaneously on the arcade difficulty level.

2.  Ghosts 'N Goblins, NES, 1986 --  You have a host of relentless foes but can only take 2 hits on the unforgiving platform, with no control over King Arthur once he's in the air. After reaching the end of the game, you have to guide the knight through obstacles, without the abiity to save.

3.  NetHack, PC, 1987 -- This game has no graphics or sound, features an incomprensible interface to players and generates random, difficult levels.

4.  Contra, NES, 1988 -- With only three lives, survival means avoiding hazards at each stage while dodging bullets -- one hit and you are done in playing this video game.   Of course, you can always start over and try again.

5.  Battletoads, NES, 1991 -- This is a side-strolling game with a third level that shows a hovering bike that is hard to maneuver.  You are fighting against amphibians.  If you get past the third level, you will need to be skillful in handling the controller and making very fast moves.

6.  XMen, Genesis, 1993 -- This game has unfairly placed enemies, and it is nearly impossible to beat bosses.  At one point, the game requires you to "reset" your computer after defeating the bosses.  The problem is if you do not lightly press the reset button, but hold it down firmly -- the game starts over again.

Here is a scene from XMen, Genesis, 1993.

7.  Radiant Silver Gun, Saturn, 1998 -- This is a different type shooter game that lets you scroll slowly, at a moderate pace, instead of fast, as most other shooter type games.  At each stage, a flood of lasers, bullets and foes are thrown at you in the video game.

8.  Metal Gear Solid, PlayStation, 1998 -- This game is purported to be one of the hardest.  In this game, you have to train yourself to think steathly, because of the Psycho Mantis, who seems to be able to read your mind and foresee your next moves.

Here is a scene from Metal Gear Solid.

9.  F-Zero GX, GameCube, 2003 -- When playing this game, you must navigate your way around zany tracks which require quick reflexes and high dexterity.

10.  Devil May Cry - Dante's Awakening, PlayStation 2, 2005 -- The Japanese hard mode is the North America and Europe's normal mode. This is an action-adventure game. CapCom later released a Special Edition game that tweaked the diffulty level more to the easy side.

11.  Ninja Gaiden Black, Xbox, 2005 -- This is an action-adventure game that also requires precise fighting skills.  If you do not make it through, Black asks if you want to lower the difficulty level to Ninja Dog -- which you probably do not want to do, since you will ceding to defeat by not being able to play the game at the higher level.  There are harder game plays such as the Mission Mode and the Master Ninja difficulty level.

Here is a scene from Ninja Raiden Black.

ninjajuse

12.  Dead Rising, Xbox 360, 2006 -- Frank West has 72 hours to survive in a land infested by zombies. There's only one save spot in the game, and if you do not execute your game play properly, you will have to start the game over again.

13.  Trials HD, Xbox 360, 2009 -- This is a motorcycle racing game where your goal is to reach the end of the zany track.  This game tests your skill as well as your patience.

14.  Super Meat Boy, Xbox360, 2010 -- In this game, you are on a modern 2D platform, and must fall, run, and jump. Obstacles that at first look difficult, become possible after a few tries.

15.  Donkey Kong Country Returns, WII, 2010 -- The platforms are tough but rewarding.  It's important to jump precisely to avoid hazards such as crumbling platforms, bottomless pits, spike traps and other obstacles. The speedy mine craft and rocket barrel level require very quick reflexes.

That's it for the top 15 most difficult video game as listed by Scott Reyburn.

Video Games: BioShock Infinite! Video Game of the Year Contender for 2012!

Bioshockinfinite1111

Scene from BioShock Infinite!  Release Date 2012!

Written by Ms. H
There is a lot to be said about a video game that is already a formidable contender for Video Game of the Year -- And it has not even been released yet!

BioShock Infinite, one of the most promising and well anticipated video games,  is scheduled for release in 2012 for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and Windows PC!

BioShock Infinite follows BioShock 2 and interesting enough is not a true sequel to the previous game.  2K Games gave Irrational Games/2K Games Australia full creative control and leeway in creating and developing BioShock Infinite.  From all the positive buzz about  BioShock Infinite, the developers did not disappoint!

Here is art for BioShock Infinite.

bioshock infinite

BioShock Infinite combines detailed graphics, intriguing game play, and a storyline like one you have never

   experienced before!

The setting moves from the underwater city of the previous game to a city in the sky, aptly named the floating City of Columbia.  Among other obstacles, Booker DeWitt has the goal or mission to rescue a magically gifted young woman, Elizabeth, who is pursued by a Songbird.  Even more perplexing, and thought provoking, is that Elizabeth has ambiguous ties to the large Songbird.

The gameplay involves the use of a lot of different and variety of weapons.  Here is how Ken Levine, Irrational Games Creative Director describes the wide range of weaponry available -- from an interview with PlayStation Blog:

"One of the first things we did when we started on BioShock Infinite was to draw a graph with y and z axes, and to say that one of those axes was the number of enemies in an encounter and the other was the range of those enemies,"  Levine said.  "In the original BioShock, the entire game lived in one corner of the graph - few enemies, all at close range - so the Electro Bolt and shotgun were perfect. BioShock Infinite is going to have much greater ranges and, potentially, far more enemies, so we're greatly increasing the spectrum of encounters that are possible, and that requires the player use a broader set of tools."

Would you like to know if BioShock Infinite will have a multiplayer mode?  Looks like "mum's the word", as indicated by Ken Levine's response  and told to Kotaku below:

"I will say that we experiment with things, but for us we are never interested in making a multiplayer mode you could just play in some other game.  Because, A) that's not creatively interesting and B), financially, you're wasting your time.  They're going to go play Halo.  They're going to go play Call of Duty.

"If we do something new - if we do something like Left 4 Dead that has something new to say- people will come to your game.  If you don't, don't waste your time."

Brilliant thinking, in my opinion!

It's all about bringing something new to the game!

If you recall, on my Mom's Minute Podcast I ranked BioShock 2 as the #1 Video Game of the Year in 2010!
Just to add "icing on the cake", BioShock Infinite has already won IGN's Best Overall Game Award at E3 2011!

On a winning streak and with all the creative juices, including strategic thinking flowing for BioShock Infinite, I would  not be surprised if BioShock Infinite becomes the Video game of the Year for 2012!

Gentlemen --Start your video game developing engines and let the competition for the Best Video Game of 2012 begin!

Gears of War 3!

Written by Ms. H

As we celebrate this beautiful Thanksgiving Day with family, friends and others who are dear to us, the video game companies are thinking about us video game players as well!

Specifically, on Thanksgiving, Epic Games released a free downloadable content pack for Gears of War 3, which will add  5 more maps to online play!   The free downloadable game pack is called the "Versus Booster Map Pack."

Here is a scene from the map pack.

Gears DLC1

The map pack consists of two favorite maps from previous versions (Swamp and Clocktower).  The other three maps are new (Azura, Rustlung, and Blooddrive).  The three new maps are from the Horde Command Pack which was released earlier in November, 2011.

There's more! Beginning this Thanksgiving, you have a chance to unlock the new weapon skins pack based on Mission Impossible:  Ghost Protocol.  The prerequisites? Just watch the Mission Impossible:  Ghost Protocol trailer on Xbox Live and beat the Gears of War 3 campaign on the Insane Difficulty level by December 25, 2011 -- which gives you one month's time to complete the challenge!   You can do it!

To Epic Games:  Thank you for the free Gears of War 3 DLC!

To You and all:  Enjoy and have a Happy Thanksgiving!

P.S.  Mom's Minute website has a new look thanks to the expertise and talent of my family member!  I hope you enjoy the redesign!

Video Games: Battlefield 3 -- "Practice Makes Perfect!"

Written by Ms. H

battlefield3

Battlefield 3 battle scene.

Note:  To view the complete article, please click on the Battlefield 3 icon below.

If you have played Battlefield 3 for the Xbox 360, you may agree that the battle scenes are action-packed, riveting, and overall engrossing!   You may feel as if you are really battling in a war-torn location -- you and your war comrades, fighting together as a team against enemies to achieve victory! And to top it off, Battlefield 3 has, in my opinion, an interesting war story line.

Battlefield 3  is "Practice Makes Perfect" for me  since I will be sharing with you my playing experience with  Battlefield 3 as I played it in the single player, "practice", tutorial mode.

If you are a veteran first shooter video game player, and consider yourself an expert, I applaud you! I plan to one day soon move further up the ranks in these type games and compete in multiplayer challenges -- not only in Battlefield 3, but other battle-type video games as well!

Here is a scene from Battlefield 3.

battlefield222

Battlefield 3 video game comes with two discs -- one is the multiplayer disc, and the other, the single player disc.  I played the single player mode with plans to advance to the multiplayer mode soon!

After the game and Xbox 360 were set up, I  played the tutorial mode of Battlefield 3 which showed instructions along with the game play including the correct buttons to execute moves, and exactly what to do, for example, "follow", "crouch," and other actions.

My family member mentioned the importance of using the cross-hairs to target enemies, instead of shooting indiscriminately -- which I was doing at first to make sure I hit the targets!  The downside of constant shooting without aiming is the loss of ammo quickly.   I soon learned how to position the cross-hairs and to aim before shooting the enemy while playing this video game.

Once I got the hang of using the controls with the help of my family member, I became immersed in the game.

The graphics were realistic, from the war entrenched environment, the ever presence of enemies, and the constant barrage of fire used for enemy confrontations and my team's protection. I learned to resist seeking cover alot and instead sought out the enemies!

I was impressed by the realistic movements of the Battlefield 3 characters, especially while in battles!  There was a scene where my war comrades had to do a "belly crawl" across the top of a tall builiding while clutching a weapon in one hand and using the other hand to move forward.  I noticed how realistist the movements were, down to the bending of the rubber soles of the war boots!

Because of the intensity of the game play, I was ready to take a break from playing after a few minutes, and at the encouragement of my family member I continued on and completed the tutorial level!

I learned a lot from watching my family member continue with the game play of Battlefield 3!  Some pointers were to be aggressive and seek out the enemies; to be on the offensive as well as the defensive, and to always look around to see where the enemie were, including shooting objects that could possibly hover the enemies.

This is a Mature +17 rated video game. I had to tune out the strong language, which to me did not serve a purpose.   On the plus side -- The graphics in the game were not  as bloody as I expected.

Of course, it goes without saying that my familly member played the game expertly, was able to hit the targets on the first shots and followed through with the overall game play!

I enjoyed playing Battlefield 3!  I have yet to play some of the other recent war battle-type games, and should be able to give you a review of those games should I play them.

Before long you will see Ms. H, or The Real Ms. H as a member of a warfighting video game playing team. In the mean time, I will continue to hone up my skills and  practice, because I do believe that "Practice Makes Perfect!"

Enjoy playing your video games!
